These are as follows: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), Benzodiazepines, Tricyclic Antidepressants, and Beta-Blockers. SSRIs prevent serotonin from being reabsorbed by nerve cells.

This allows for serotonin levels to rise and improve mood. SNRIs work in the same manner as SSRIs but have the added benefit of increasing brain norepinephrine. Both SSRIs and SNRI can be used to treat anxiety. The physical symptoms of anxiety, including muscle relaxation, can be managed with benzodiazepines.

Complementary Treatments

Alternative treatments are available that go beyond the boundaries of traditional medicine and can help with an anxiety disorder.
