How to manage a plantar plate tear?

A plantar plate tear is a tiny tear or strain to the ligament that is beneath the smaller toe joints in the foot. It is almost always related to excessive use, particularly in exercises that require the toes to become bent back or dorsiflexed. The pain is usually just over the area distal to the joint at the base of the foot. Because this issue is due to the toe bending to much backwards or upwards (dorsiflexing) when walking, strapping is a good strategy to limit that movement.

The best way for taping a plantar plate tear is to loop some strapping around the toe to pull the toe down in a plantarflexed position. The ends of the tape go below the ball of the foot and by looping around the toe it should keep the toe plantarflexed. The thought being is that whenever we walk, and the rearfoot comes up off the floor and the toe flexes there is less strain on the plantar plate since the toe is prevented from bending back. This way the plantar plate tear taping can certainly help the damage heal. This could require adequate time but is by and large successful. Some other methods may be used to assist in preventing the dorsiflexion over the joint that is hurt, for example having a more firm sole shoe that is not flexible since this can prevent too much motion at the joints. There's also stiff plates which you can use as insoles to make the footwear more rigid. A foot orthotic device which has a cavity over the painful region can also be used for getting load away from the painful area will also allow it to be more comfortable to walk on. These types of methods are normally very helpful, particularly that strapping. Nevertheless, as we still need to walk around on the feet and not get total rest, it can take many months with this strategy in order to obtain a result. Sometimes it does not work out like that or the problem is particularly painful. In those circumstances, surgery to correct the tear can be indicated.
